Spoils shared at Enborne Road

A high scoring match at Enbourne Road Saturday allowed Falkland and Boyne Hill to take a share of the spoils in Div 1 of the Thames Valley league.

Batting first Boyne Hill made a steady, if not cautious start against the opening attack of Bruce Martin and Gul Afridi but it was not until the introduction of Bobby Malik and Nigel Trumper that wickets began to fall. At 155-5 Falkland would have fancied their chances of cleaning up the tail but with the pitch offering little in the way of assistance it was the Boyne Hill batsman that went on the offensive with Shalika and Mohammed virtually single handedly taking the game away from Falkland. A 95 run partnership was ended by Trumper, who preceded to mop up the tail until Boyne Hills innings finished off on 279 which was not a bad result for Falkland as they could well have been looking at chasing in excess of 300. Trumper was the pick of the bowlers with 5-79 with Malik taking 2-68 and Jason Williams chipping in with 1-11.

The Falkland reply got off to a bad start with previous weeks top scorer Paul Jenkins chopping on for 4 but any signs of a Falkland collapse were soon dispelled with Bruce Martin joining Will Langmead in a quality display of patience, good running and boundary hitting. They took the score to 160-1 before another big shot was attempted by Martin to get the score rolling and he was caught for a very well played 70. Kieran Wood tried his best to move the scoring rate along before he was LBW for 19. All hopes hinged on Langmead for a surprise victory but a mixture of fatigue and bad shot saw him go for a fine 83 and continue to lead the league in runs scored.

Jason Williams went up the order to join Jim Ettridge in a last attempt to steal the game away from Boyne Hill but unfortunately the overs ran out for them with both ending up not out on 19 and with Falkland agonisingly only 30 runs short at 249-5.
An excellent try by Falkland in the circumstances and a game that although leaves them 2nd bottom, only 14 points from 4th place with a visit to basement boys Reading in a must win game for Falklands season.
