In a high-scoring and closely contested fixture at Falkland, the 2nd XI sides of Falkland and Reading delivered an entertaining clash, with the home side pulling off a successful chase to secure victory by 6 wickets.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Reading 2nd XI made a strong start. Opener Zain Qadeer laid the foundation with a stylish 68, falling to a sharp caught and bowled by Razon Dash. The momentum continued through the middle order, as Shayaan Ahmed anchored the innings with a composed and unbeaten 75*, guiding Reading to a competitive 265 for 6 in their allotted 45 overs. Daminda Kolugala and Duncan Johnson were the pick of the Newbury bowlers, keeping things tight during the crucial middle overs and ensuring the total remained within reach.
Chasing 266, Falkland got off to a steady start before Craig Williams took control of the innings. Williams remained on the field for the entire match and produced a remarkable unbeaten 104*, displaying concentration, timing, and temperament. He was well-supported by Duncan Johnson, who followed up his bowling performance with a commanding 88 with the bat, forming a match-defining partnership.
Reading’s bowlers, particularly Tanish Ramakrishnan and Umar Sabri, kept things disciplined on a quick outfield, but Falkland’s top order proved too strong. In the 43.4th over, Oscar Fry struck the winning runs, sealing an impressive run chase with 8 balls to spare.
It was a fine all-round team performance from Falkland 2nd XI, with standout contributions in both departments. Despite the loss, Reading showed strong batting depth and resilience.
