Falkland Women’s 1st XI have never beaten their nemesis Moreton CC. In the first game of the season at home Falkland again succumbed by three wickets, so with fingers crossed we returned to Moreton in the return leg.
Winning the toss and electing to field, Falkland struggled to adapt to the outfield conditions, giving away a number of extras and additional runs. At the first drinks break Moreton were 100 for 2 off 14, with Lottie Aird and Izzy Storrar with a wicket apiece.
Getting used to the conditions, Falkland tighten up their field play and reduced Moreton’s scoring rate so that they finish their innings on 227 for 3 off their 40 overs. Meika King taking the third wicket with an excellent runout and narrowly missing a second earlier on.
In reply – Holly Rider and Izzy Storrar were going along nicely, and above the required run rate, when Holly drove straight only to be deflected on to the stumps to have Izzy unluckily run out – always an extra depressing way to be out. Ava Lee joined Holly, only for Holly to be caught for 27. Ava started to accelerate, before Poppy Camplin was caught. Ava continued to dominate with Lottie Aird playing second fiddle, and by the time Ava was out caught for 89, (Lottie 43*) they had built a partnership of over 100. However Falkland still required a further 41 off the remaining 7 overs. Meika allowed the tension to build before she smashed two sixes and a four to level the game in the 38th over, and allowing Lottie to take a single to win the game. A well persevered 52 for Lottie, and a quick 22 off 16 for Meika. The dragon is Slayed!
